...Transformation of The
Inner Kingdom

Alchemy of Community
Conscious communities are gaining momentum all over
the world. In Vancouver and beyond, there are large
networks of creative communities who are actively
producing many unique events, projects and dynamic
spaces. In short, we are manifesting realms in which
we can thrive, not just survive!
These are realms filled with art, music, dance,
sacredness, spirituality, joy, diversity and
creative expression. We also explore sustainable
practices, ecological living, organic social
structures and progressive leadership.
In the last few years, I have co-created with over
14 cohesive communities as a performance artist,
workshop facilitator, community builder and event
coordinator. Community Building is an
important aspect of my life, because I am having fun
while being of service.

also a contributor to the spirit of community that
helps make East Van great."

How do you
build a cohesive community?
In my experience, here are 5 keys to successful
village building:
1) Hold a collective
VISION but celebrate DIVERSITY.
Just as bio-diversity ensures the continuation of an
eco-system, so does socio-diversity allow for the
continuation of the “village”.
2) Create a village
CULTURE, rich with art and spirituality.
Support artistic and cultural diversity. Support
community projects, events and spaces which nurture
a village culture. examples: Festivals,
celebrations, fairs, rituals, ceremonies, parties,
performance venues and galleries.
3) Share RESOURCES.
Pool together talents, skills, knowledge,
materials, tools and even land! Provide mentorship
and training opportunities. Consider elders as
valuable members with much wisdom and experience to
contribute. Consider youth as equally valid
members with new perspectives and insights to offer.
4) Allow the
community to EVOLVE.
As the village expands, it will go through many
transformations. The essence of the vision can
continue to guide the growth, but the forms and
structures must not be rigid. The village must
breathe and flow organically, even as conscious
intentions hold the collective dream in place.
5) Have FUN.
Let creativity, play, imagination and humour
flow into all community projects and activities.
Take turns exploring different roles within the
project or community.
Other elements explored in this course:
1) Archetypal roles within a community and
which roles are calling to you presently!
2) Assessing one's resources and skill set,
and seeing how to activate each area more fully.
3) How to take the first steps in creating
community, with small or large projects.
4) Examples and stories of conscious
communities locally and beyond.
Here are 2
questions that you can answer before the workshop:
1) How many
communities (micro-communities) do you belong to?
examples of group structures:
a dance community
a music community
an arts community
a spiritual community
an activist or environmental community
a community or group who produce or support an event
or festival
a geographical community
an intellectual or scientific community
an adventure sport or outdoor enthusiasts community
a political community
a corporate or business community
a group gathering for a common hobby (sport, hobby,
entertainment)
a group gathering to support a cause (charity or
advocacy groups)
a family
online communities or forums
2) What are your
unique interests and gifts... passions you ENJOY
sharing within your communities? Even
seemingly trivial passions play an equal part to
so-called profound passions, so try to release
judgment and follow your heart's whisperings...
