The Humanities 101 Community Programme presents:
Alchemy of Inspiration

This course focuses on how to get the energy needed to influence your life positively. It will be facilitated by Little Woo, an experienced counselor and performance artist, who regularly teaches courses which are empowering on many levels.

Available to Humanities 101 students and alumni

The Humanities 101 Community Programme offers free university-level education to people living on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and surrounding areas who are passionate about learning and knowledge, regardless of their economic situation, academic history or other financial and social barriers to further education.

Now going into its 10th year, the Programme runs three non-credit courses at UBC as well as a number of Public Programmes which are held on the Downtown Eastside; they all focus on relevant, interdisciplinary approaches to critical and creative thinking from the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

All current and past students are invited to be part of the Steering Committee which meets regularly at Carnegie Centre, guides all aspects of the Programme and ensures that responsiveness to the community is the main touchstone. Supported by residents of the Downtown Eastside and surrounding areas, and scores of volunteers there, at UBC and elsewhere, Humanities 101 is sponsored and funded by UBC’s Office of the Dean of Arts and through private donations.

Little Woo featured on the cover of Shared Vision Magazine

Riding the Wave of Adventure
Little Woo's journey from corporate cubicle
to a life of passion
by JENNIFER CROLL

“Life is pure magic,” says Vancouver’s legendary Little Woo. We are sitting together on a sun-dappled park bench in East Van. She’s dressed like a modern-day pirate with short pants, white shirt, vest, and red wraps entwined in her waist-length hair. Everything about her—her outfit, her demeanour—is playful. But her turquoise-eyeliner-rimmed brown eyes reveal that when it comes to magic, she’s not joking around.

Little Woo is a relatively new nom de guerre for the gifted performance artist. As a child growing up in New Brunswick, she had a challenging childhood that she describes as a prolonged “dark night of the soul.” But she says there are no regrets, because it helped create who she is now....

All practitioners who offer to be of service in our sanctuary and provide at least one 20 min one-on-one session, will receive the discounted rate of $300. We still have space if you or someone you know would like to join our expanding circle of wonderful healers.

In the community networking and promotions area, anyone can share their brochures, books, CDs, etc.  Also please be sure to contribute to our silent auction this year as proceeds will be going to two very worthy causes:

On this night, the Illuminares Lantern Procession fills the air with music, and thousands of paper lanterns come alive with fire. A brilliant spectacle of weaving serpents, birds in flight, planets in orbit, schools of fish, and all sorts of glowing and shimmering creatures of the imagination.

Processional bands playing world and folk music encourage spectators on the sidelines to join in the journey through the park. Along the way, audiences pass brightly illuminated displays and engaging circus performances of juggling, dancing, clowning, and so much more.

The Illuminares Lantern Procession builds up to an amazing show of art, music, dance, fire sculptures, torch choreography, and dazzling fireworks on the lake.

Little Woo profiled in Reconnection Magazine
Read the whole article at: http://www.reconnectionmagazine.ca/spring07/06.php

Profile of Little Woo

From a very young age, Little Woo was fascinated with the spiritual realm. Her childhood years were unconventional and challenging, with much time spent indoors in isolation. Without the usual elements of child’s play in her world, she turned inwards and developed an intimate relationship with her inner voice. This voice was connected to the world of imagination and art, which helped her survive the formative years. But other forces were also present, forces that were ominous and angry. So her mind was a battle zone, where a debate was raging over the nature of reality itself. Was this simply a cruel world where justice existed only by random chance? Or was it a magical world where beauty and truth held sway?

As soon as she could read, she began to study the mythology books in the children's section of the library and the occult texts in the adults' section. A deep passion for the unseen, the unexplained and the esoteric guided her early quest to understand the universe...  read more

Velofusion Dance Party
ROCK THE JAILHOUSE: a Pre-trial benefit for Betty Krawzcyk

at the Anza Club
3 West 8th Avenue Vancouver
$10 cover
$5 with membership or if you come with Critical Mass

With Eats from the Vegetarian Resource Centre

Presenters include:
environmental spokesperson and former Green Party candidate Damian Kettlewell
Squamish elder and longtime activist Harriet Nahanee
journalist and poet Marni Norwich

Entertainers include:
Little Woo
DJ Timothy Wisdom
Fatty Fatty and the Roaches.

About Betty:
Krawczyk faces charges of contempt of court for protesting the destruction of Eagleridge Bluffs. The 78 year-old great grandmother and writer has already spent more than two and a half years incarcerated for her activism. Krawczyk says her trial brings into relief both the destruction of an irreplaceable ecosystem and the erosion of democracy in Canada.

Krawczyk will be representing herself at the week-long trial beginning January 29th. Her case will rest on the argument she be permitted to base her defense on the reason she was protesting rather than be tried for breaking a court injunction to forbid her to protest. She says corporations regularly use injunctions to prevent public protest.

"The courts are supposed to represent the people," says Krawczyk. "If instead of looking through the prism of pubic interest, courts are looking through the prism if corporate interest, we're in very sad shape."

Radha Yoga and Eatery, 728 Main St.
$5 - $10 sliding scale

Join Beats Without Borders and special guests Dharmakasa, First Nations Elders and little woo at the kickoff to Earthdance 2006. The evening begins early with a scrumptious veggie dinner at Radha Yoga (2 for 1 entrees with an Earthdance Flyer!).

Dharmakasa, a trio blending traditional Indian and Japanese elements will provide the sonic landscape. Dharmakasa recently opened for Anoushka Shankar at the Chan Centre.

Little Woo will perform a pagan burlesque act.

Later, with bellies satiated and bodies full of energy, the BWB collective will throw down the hottest dance tracks on the planet, with special guest dancers and performers. Expect to travel from the bazaars of India to the plains of Africa to the skyscrapers of Japan!

Come early, as last year this event was at capacity.
