West Coast Swing (aka Funky Swing)...
...IS a partner dance.
...IS NOT the swing you saw in old movies.
...IS modern, fast n'funky, or slow and sensual.
...IS incredibly practical
...IS danced to rock music, pop, blues, Hip Hop,
Rn'B, big band, jazz, country - you name it.
...IS very popular in Vancouver (and virtually every
city in North America)
...IS famous for giving women much more freedom than
other dances.
West Coast Swing is a contemporary style of swing
developed forty years ago on the West Coast -
California. It spread throughout the US and is now
the most popular form of swing dancing in North
America with WC swing clubs in most North American
cities. Its popularity stems from the amazing
variety of styles: it can be slow and elegant, silky
and sensual, hip and funky, fast and furious. It has
been danced with a nightclub, ballroom, or country
style depending upon the region you're in, the music
playing or your mojo.

Tuesdays 9-Midnight
Shakti Tea House
1340 Commercial Dr.
by donation
at Zodiac Café 243 West Broadway
(next to Kwasi’s drum shop, near Alberta and
Broadway, on the north side of the street).
Come and join the jam and get into the new “Vanruba
Gumbo” sound that’s being cooked up. A musical sound
that is the result of Lorick the saxman, and some of
us Spanish Banks loyalists, cooking up some things
with Kwasi, Wally and their regulars.
A great sax-and-drums sound, usually launching off
from Yoruba songs, that gets jammed into a rocking
mix that’s totally worthy of New Orleans. “Vanruba”
means “Vancouver” and “Yoruba”. “Gumbo” refers to
particularly well-blended or tasty musical mixes.
The “mbo” at the end of “gumbo” is the same Bantu
root -- meaning “musical” -- that shows up in
“mambo”, “bombo”, (and, slightly modified, in
“samba”, “rumba”, “timba”, “cumbia”, etc.). Cool
name for some Vancouver-born jam music, eh?
Tuesday nights
8 to 11pm
$ 10 please pay at counter if you’re wanting to join
the jam.
Otherwise, no door charge at all if you’re coming
just to watch and have a coffee.
A small amount of dance floor. Refreshments
available. Street parking easy enough. Great
jamming!

Dueling Grand Pianos at Ceilis
Irish Pub!
Dueling Grand Pianos will take over Thursday
nights at Ceili’s Irish Pub beginning May 22. Two
top entertainers face off with just their pianos and
their best chops. The act is high in audience
participation, with spontaneous sing-alongs, comical
harassment, and of course some rowdy Rock n Roll!
The Dueling Grand Pianos is a Canadian version of
the shows seen at the famous clubs New York, New
York in Las Vegas, and Howl at the Moon in San
Antonio. It will be the first weekly show of its
kind in the Lower Mainland.
Ceili’s Irish Pub is known for offering the highest
customer experience in the business, and Lisa
Caruso, Sales and Marketing Manager for Ceili’s
Irish Pub, said “this night will be no exception”.
With the pianos centered in the middle of the room,
and a live feed throughout the pub, everyone will
have front row seats to the action.
“We wanted to offer Vancouverites a fresh, fun
entertainment alternative to Thursday nights in
Vancouver. We want people to get excited about going
out on Thursday nights, and I’m confident that the
Dueling Grand Pianos will do that!”
Caruso is anticipating a great response to the newly
revamped Thursday night. She says that the usual
corporate bookings and pub crowd on Thursday nights
“will be pleasantly surprised” with the added
entertainment.
